Quick answer

Start with what you can prove.

  • Use Letter paper, a clear layout and no more than two pages for most applications.
  • Do not include a photo, Social Insurance Number or sensitive personal details.
  • Show relevant accomplishments and use numbers only when they are accurate.
  • Match the language and instructions of the role and province where you apply.

1. Keep a Canadian résumé clear and concise

The Government of Canada Job Bank recommends a strategic résumé that presents skills, experience and assets clearly. Its current guidance says to limit the résumé to two pages and emphasize recent relevant experience.

TheJobSort recommendation: use Letter paper, a simple one-column layout and familiar section headings unless the employer requests another format.

2. Leave out sensitive personal information

Job Bank says not to include age, weight, height, marital status, religion, political views or a Social Insurance Number. It also says a photo is not the norm in Canada. Keep the focus on relevant skills and experience.

3. Show what you accomplished

Canadian guidance recommends highlighting achievements rather than simply repeating duties. Use real examples and firm numbers when you know them. When no reliable number exists, describe the scope, action and observable outcome without estimating.

4. Follow the language and local instructions

Use the language requested in the posting and check regional expectations, especially for bilingual or Quebec roles. Do not claim language proficiency that you cannot demonstrate. The advertisement and employer instructions take priority over a general template.

5. Complete the Canadian quality check

  • Confirm contact details, dates and recent experience.
  • Remove outdated material and unrelated detail.
  • Limit each section to a readable number of focused bullets.
  • Proofread and ask another person to review the final file.
