Quick answer
Start with what you can prove.
- Use A4 paper, British English and consistent headings and bullet points.
- Include contact details, an optional introduction, work history and education.
- Leave out age, date of birth, marital status and nationality.
- Do not publish a referee's contact details on the CV.
1. Build a familiar UK CV structure
The National Careers Service lists contact details, an introduction, education, work history and references as common sections. If you have substantial relevant experience, show work history before education. Early-career applicants may put education first.
TheJobSort recommendation: use A4 paper, British English and a one-column structure unless the employer asks for another format.
2. Leave out unnecessary personal information
Official UK guidance says to include your name, phone, email and a maintained professional profile when useful. It also says not to include your age, date of birth, marital status or nationality.
3. Put recent experience first
List paid work, placements and relevant volunteering with the most recent first. Show the employer, title and dates, then summarize what you did and achieved. The National Careers Service recommends using clear, concise examples and STAR thinking.
Employment gaps are common. Keep dates truthful. Use the application or interview to explain context when needed instead of hiding or changing the timeline.
4. Protect referee information
The National Careers Service advises against placing another person's contact details on the CV. If useful, state that references are available on request, then share details privately after permission.
5. Check clarity and local language
- Use a clear font at 11 points or larger when practical.
- Keep spelling, punctuation and date style consistent.
- Tailor the evidence to the role while preserving the facts.
- Ask another person to proofread the final file.
